East Coast Road, running east to west through Katong, serves as the area’s main commercial thoroughfare, lined with major hotels and a variety of restaurants.
Joo Chiat Road, with its charming Peranakan shophouses and nostalgic eateries, offers a glimpse into the neighbourhood’s rich heritage.
At the intersection of these two roads, you’ll find i12 Katong, a large shopping mall. Using this as a landmark, let’s set off on a journey to explore Katong.

Haven of Peranakan Architecture
One of the highlights of exploring Katong is its stunning Peranakan architecture, characterised by vibrant facades and intricate tilework.
This district boasts beautifully preserved shophouses, many of which continue to serve as private residences.
When visiting, kindly be considerate of the residents and respect their privacy while taking photos or sightseeing.
“Stilt” Terrace House
A short walk east on East Coast Road from i12 Katong will lead you to a side street, where “stilt” terrace houses are located.
Before land reclamation in the 1960s, this stretch of road ran along the natural coastline. The raised houses were built to protect against encroaching seawater and high tides.
Each unit features a charming staircase at the front, leading up to an entrance at half-level.
