The Story Behind the Singapore Sling
The Singapore Sling was created in 1915, back when Singapore was a British colony. At that time, Raffles Hotel was a prestigious social venue for high society.
Women were not allowed to drink alcohol openly due to social etiquette, which led to the creation of a cocktail that appeared to be fruit juice. This is how the iconic Singapore Sling came to be.

How to Get to the Long Bar
Raffles Hotel is conveniently located just a short walk from both City Hall and Esplanade MRT stations.
The entrance to the Long Bar is on the North Bridge Road side of the hotel, marked by a large sign featuring an illustration of the Singapore Sling and its history.
Just outside the entrance, you’ll be greeted by Mr. Ngiam Tong Boon, the legendary bartender and creator of the Singapore Sling, with his signature cocktail in hand.
Opening Hours & Dress Code
The Long Bar is open from 11:00 am to 10:30 pm (11:30 pm on Thursdays to Saturdays). While queues can build up even during early weekday hours, the turnover is quick, as most patrons head off once they’ve had a Singapore Sling.
Notably, there’s no specific dress code! Visitors are welcome to drop by in T-shirts and sandals, making it the perfect spot for tourists.

Even after its renovation, Long Bar retains its classic, historical charm.
Black rattan chairs, chic tiled floors, and retro ceiling fans still in use exude a timeless beauty that reflects the rich history of Raffles Hotel.

At Long Bar, ordering a Singapore Sling is a must.
While the price has climbed over the years to $41 per glass, this original version, exclusively available at Long Bar, offers a priceless memory of your trip—it’s definitely worth trying.
Behind the bar, the bartender is constantly shaking the cocktail shaker, keeping up with the constant flow of orders.
This fruity blend combines a gin base with pineapple juice, lime juice and curaçao. It takes on a beautiful rosy hue from grenadine syrup and cherry liqueur. A truly tropical cocktail, perfect for Singapore.
Toss Peanut Shells – It’s Tradition!
Another key part of the Long Bar is peanuts. Once seated, you’ll find a burlap sack filled with free peanuts on the table.
What makes it interesting is the tradition at Long Bar: after enjoying the peanuts, you’re invited to toss the empty shells onto the floor.
Being able to litter, an act typically not allowed—it’s all part of the fun and thrill at the Long Bar.
In addition to peanuts, light snacks like satay and spring rolls are also available.
